Why do Japanese people eat unagi in the summer?

Writer's picture: UnatotoUnatoto

In Japan, the period from mid-July to early August is considered the hottest time of the year. To cope with the heat, Japanese people often choose to eat cooling dishes to maintain a balance in health. Popular summer dishes include cold soups, chilled Higashi Chuka noodles, fresh fruits, salads, and notably, eel rice.

So, where did Japanese unagi originate, and why has it become such a popular summer dish in Japan? Let’s explore this topic with Unatoto Singapore in this article!

Unagi Don (Eel Rice): a Summer Dish in Japan

Doyo no Ushi no Hi (土用丑の日) refers to specific days in Japan when people traditionally eat Unagi. In Japanese, "Doyo" (土用) denotes a period of 18 or 19 days preceding the beginning of each season: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Meanwhile, "Ushi no Hi" (丑の日) translates to "Day of the Ox" in the zodiac cycle, or simply "Ox Day." (In the Japanese zodiac, the ox takes the place of the water buffalo.)

According to Japan's traditional lunar calendar, Doyo days occasionally align with Ox Days, earning the name "Doyo no Ushi no Hi." The Ox Day during the summer Doyo is considered the hottest day of the year. So, why do the Japanese eat eel rice on Ox Day during summer?

The custom of eating eel rice on Doyo no Ushi no Hi is believed to have started during the Edo period. A struggling eel shop owner sought advice from Hiraga Gennai, a renowned pharmacist of the time, to improve his failing business. Hiraga suggested that eating foods with the letter "U" on Doyo no Ushi no Hi could help combat the intense summer heat. He advised the shop owner to post a sign at the store entrance that read, "Today is Ushi no Hi. Eat foods with 'U' to beat the heat."

The shop owner followed the advice and gradually promoted the idea that eel dishes were highly beneficial for health, especially at the beginning of summer. The reasoning was that during this time, the body needs more nutrients to avoid fatigue and discomfort caused by the summer heat. Unexpectedly, this initiative significantly boosted the shop's business, making it flourish visibly. Their reputation spread far and wide, and many neighboring shops started to follow suit. The custom of eating eel rice on Doyo no Ushi no Hi each year is believed to have originated from this practice.

The Health Benefits of Unagi (Japanese Eel)

In fact, Japanese eels provide a full range of essential vitamins and minerals. Some of the nutrients found in eels include protein, omega-3, vitamin E, vitamin A, phosphorus, and more. Additionally, eels are believed to have the highest levels of unsaturated fatty acids compared to other marine creatures.
